Centering

This is the first and most important technique in wheel throwing. It involves positioning the clay on the wheel and using your hands to push and pull the clay until it is perfectly centered on the wheel.

Opening

Once the clay is centered, the next step is to create an opening in the center of the clay using your fingers or a tool. This will form the basis for the shape of the vessel you are creating.

 

Pulling up

This technique involves using your hands to pull the clay upwards and form the walls of the vessel. This can be done in a variety of ways to create different shapes and textures.

Trimming

Once the vessel is formed, excess clay can be removed from the bottom using a tool called a trimming tool. This helps to refine the shape and make the piece more stable.

Altering

This technique involves manipulating the shape of the vessel while it is still wet on the wheel. This can be done by pushing in or pulling out parts of the clay, or by creating unique textures or patterns.

Dipping

This technique involves dipping the entire piece of pottery into a glaze bucket. It is a quick and efficient way to coat a large number of pieces, but can result in a uniform finish.

Pouring

Similar to dipping, pouring involves pouring the glaze onto the pottery. This can create a more controlled and intentional application of the glaze.

Brushing
This technique involves using a brush to apply the glaze to the pottery. It allows for more precision and control, and can create a range of effects depending on the brush strokes and layering.
